Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
Benjamin Franklin (1706 - 1790), Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759
In the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved.
Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882 - 1945), Speech, September 22, 1936
The love of liberty is the love of others; the love of power is the love of ourselves.
William Hazlitt (1778 - 1830)
Sure there are dishonest men in local government. But there are dishonest men in national government too.
Richard M. Nixon (1913 - 1994)
A conservative is a man who believes that nothing should be done for the first time.
Alfred E. Wiggam
Half of the American people have never read a newspaper. Half never voted for President. One hopes it is the same half.
Gore Vidal (1925 - )
The problem of power is how to achieve its responsible use rather than its irresponsible and indulgent use - of how to get men of power to live for the public rather than off the public.
Robert F. Kennedy (1925 - 1968), 'I Remember, I Believe,' The Pursuit of Justice, 1964
You can no more win a war than you can win an earthquake.
Jeannette Rankin (1880 - 1973)
What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?
Mahatma Gandhi (1869 - 1948), "Non-Violence in Peace and War"
Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 - 1965)

A plea...
I am almost finished reading Greg Palast's "Armed Madhouse," and I'm just beside myself with all the evil that he exposes. I don't mean to be overly dramatic, but seriously, evil is the only word I can think of for all of the sneaky things that corporations and our government have done to we, the people. And the mainstream media that has refused to alert us (because they are owned by huge corporations).
The book has a decidedly liberal bent, but it should be required reading for anyone who is disillusioned with the way our country is going. Palast doesn't spare the Dems when they do wrong, and believe me, they do wrong. I'm having a crisis trying to determine who will be worth voting for when the time comes.
Please read the book. Educate yourself, then try to educate others.
